Why therapists focus so much on emotions?
Have you ever wondered why therapists focus so much on emotions? I mean, feelings can hurt. Can’t we push them down and talk about the weather, our favorite sports team, or the latest presidential election updates?
I talk about emotion with my clients because I know it can lead to clarity and healing. According to Hilary Jacobs Hendel in her book It’s Not Always Depression,
“emotions tell us what we want and need and what is bad for us. When we don’t use our emotions it’s like navigating a boat across tumultuous ocean waters without sonar or even a compass.”
Believe it or not, blocking affect can lead to anxiety, depression, and other distress.
Yes, emotion can be intense and complicated. But we all need to be understood and validated. Asking someone to be happy when they are sad, angry, or disgusted only leads to internal conflict. Learning to navigate your emotional brain can lead to increased mental and physical wellbeing.
I will talk more about affect in future blogs. Thank you for reading my first post. Send me a message and let me know what you liked about this short introduction to emotion and what you would love to see in future blogs.
Until next time, be well!
